Ovid’s classic poem begins at the very beginning, with the creation myth. He wrote of the Greek creation story, and progressed to write about the Ages of Mankind, the deluge and the myths of Deucalion and Pyrrha, Apollo and Daphne, Io, and Phaëton. His work comprised of nearly 250 myths, spread across 15 books. He covered the story of Troy and how it was destroyed, the stories of Hercules, Achilles, Ajax and Ulysses. He wrote of Circe and the stories of Rome. He progressed to the deification of Julius Caesar, and finally ended his work with an epilogue. Ovid’s masterpiece is widely considered to have inspired many artists and poets throughout the centuries, including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dante and Boccaccio. This edition presents an easily readable English version, adding a sense of modernity to the tales.
